Have any questions ?## FAQ - Pension planning

How much can I deduct with pillar 3a? In 2026, a person affiliated to a pension fund (LPP) can deduct up to CHF 7,258.- per year for pillar 3a.

For people not affiliated to an LPP pension fund, the deduction can reach 20% of income, up to a maximum of CHF 36,288.- per year (cap applicable in 2026).

Each payment into pillar 3a reduces your taxable income, subject to the applicable tax conditions. A well-designed contribution strategy therefore combines pension planning, tax optimisation and wealth building.

What's the difference between pillar 3a and pillar 3b? Pillar 3a and pillar 3b serve different purposes. The choice depends notably on your tax situation, your investment horizon and the degree of flexibility you're looking for.

Pillar 3a - Pension planning and tax optimisation
Capped and tax-deductible, pillar 3a is designed for long-term pension planning. The funds are generally tied up until retirement, with early withdrawal possible in certain situations provided for by law.

Pillar 3b - Freedom and wealth flexibility
With no legal contribution cap and no lock-in until retirement, pillar 3b offers greater freedom in building and passing on your wealth. Its tax treatment depends notably on the canton and the structure chosen.

I'm a cross-border worker: under what conditions can I access pillar 3a? As a cross-border worker, you can access pillar 3a if you carry out a gainful activity in Switzerland and receive income subject to AVS contributions. However, to benefit from the tax deduction in Switzerland, additional conditions may apply depending on your canton and tax situation.

Is an LPP buy-in really worthwhile for tax purposes? An LPP buy-in is a tax optimisation and pension planning lever: subject to applicable conditions, the amount bought in is deductible from your taxable income in the year of payment, while boosting your retirement benefits.

The value of a buy-in, however, depends on your tax situation, your LPP certificate and your pension planning horizon. The timing of payments can also play a decisive role in tax optimisation.

I'm self-employed: what pension provision applies to me? As a self-employed person, you have greater freedom in building your pension provision, but also greater responsibility for protecting your income and your retirement.

Depending on your situation, several levers can be combined: pillar 3a, optional occupational pension (LPP) and income protection in the event of incapacity to work.

When can I withdraw my pillar 3a before retirement? Early withdrawal from pillar 3a is possible in certain situations provided for by law: buying or building a home for your own use, repaying a mortgage, leaving Switzerland permanently, becoming self-employed as your main activity, or paying the funds into an occupational pension (LPP) buy-in. Withdrawal is also possible in the event of full disability.

Each type of withdrawal has its own tax and financial implications, in particular a reduced tax levied at the time of payment, separate from your ordinary income tax. Your withdrawal strategy (amount, timing, staggering across several 3a accounts) can have a significant impact on the final tax burden.

Helvate reviews your situation to determine whether an early withdrawal makes sense in light of your pension goals and your overall tax planning.
